Poland's Room | Thursday During the Trial

[While Lithuania hadn't reacted much in the trial itself--for obvious reasons--as soon as the door is closed he regards Poland much more critically.]

There's a secret passage in the chapel.

[It's not a question. The and you didn't tell me is only implied, as well. He's not exactly judgmental, but it's obvious Poland not telling him has caught him completely off-guard, which might say something for how much he's ended up trusting the other nation at this point.]

I am sorry that you think, I think so little of you that I only did it for my own interests.

[Nations lie. Hadn't Spain said that? And Spain would know, after what he did--

But Lithuania wants to believe Poland.]

Why didn't you tell me, then?

[Poland sits down in his desk chair, appraising Lithuania for a long moment before speaking.]

I didn't have to tell you anything at all you know. I didn't even have to outright lie to Marlow and Sonia about whether I passed. All I had to say was I couldn't figure out one and the rest were hard and they let it go like that. I'm completely aware that people think I'm stupid.

I showed you the map because I liked you. I didn't realize you couldn't see what was on it. I had no intention of hiding anything from you initially.

[Lithuania doesn't believe for a moment that Poland is stupid--but Poland knows that, too, so he doesn't bother stating the obvious.]

And when I told you I couldn't see it, you decided not to tell me about it. But you did tell me about the one that seemed to lead to the smoking room. So why didn't you tell me about the one associated with the chapel?

[To Lithuania, the one leading to the smoking room would have been far more advantageous to keep hidden. Poland couldn't have known that trap door was going to be locked, so access to a room that everyone thought wasn't accessible would have been the best thing to keep secret, as far as Lithuania is aware.]

Actually I thought about not telling you about it during the walk to the wine cellar. I decided on it when I figured out which bottle needed to be pulled even with my memory loss problems.

I didn't tell you about it because it occurred to me that maybe I would have to drop the holier than thou act if an incentive I couldn't avoid finally reared it's head. And that maybe, eventually, I would have to kill someone.

What better place is there for me to murder someone than the one place on the grounds that I haven't visited of my own accord since Ukraine's death?

[Lithuania almost laughs, because he can remember only last week claiming that Poland not being willing to enter the parlor was a reason he wasn't guilty.]

You're lucky you weren't on the suspect list this week. [Is what he says, because he can't say I think I would let you get away with it.]

...There's probably a reason six nations were brought here. If they're so interested in ratings it's a shame Miss Ukraine and Latvia were scapegoated. [Nations lie and nations kill, after all. But finally, he sighs.]

It's alright. [He means it.]

If I had shown it to you and I'd gone through with it that could have possibly made you my accomplice.

[Poland seems to deflate entirely.]

[Lithuania stares at him for a moment.]

[Then he starts laughing. It's not at Poland's expense--it doesn't exactly seem like a humorous sort of laugh. It's something similar to relief, or maybe shock, like when someone barely avoids being badly hurt or realizes the monster they were so frightened of was only a shadow.]

[He collects himself, though, after a moment.]

I like you, too, you know.

[Present tense.]

[Poland folds his arms over his chest and glares at the wall.]

...I'm sorry I assumed.

[notyetlost]

[Why is his face getting so hot and why are his eyes itching?]

[vytis]

Poland? [Lithuania moves to get a better look at him.]

[notyetlost]

There a door in the back wall of the wine cellar. It leads to the stables and then the church. [Poland turns his head further, his eyes catch on the picture he drew of him and Lithuania.]

... I'm like. Releasing you from your pinky promise obligations.

[Poland discretely swipes at his eyes with his sleeve.]

[vytis]

[Lithuania's stomach clenches up for entirely different reasons now.]

I'm not going to tell anyone you knew about it beforehand. We just found it, that's all. It's--it's okay. [His tone softens with each word he speaks, desperate to not upset Poland any more.] It's really okay. I don't--I'm not angry. I don't have any right and--and I'm not angry at you for not telling me and--if you're angry at me, I wouldn't blame you.

No one would believe you anyways.

It's fine. Let's go.
